Yes. you. can. :) It is fast, at least the version we have, and fairly stable (does not go out often). Don't know if that's the case for all locations/neighborhoods, though, and you need a landline + tech capabilities...

No, I have not tried mumble. Skype was slow on EVDO, but it was OK if you are in an area where it's used less, or if you are using it in a time of day when it's less busy (after 10pm, for example). We have ADSL now, and it's great! We love it, and it's fairly stable. If you are staying longer, it's a definite consideration...

another question for you re: internet. We're traveling to addis again and trying to find a good way to communicate with our kids back home. EVDO was too slow to use skype, and phone is very expensive.

have you ever tried any low bandwidth voice chat providers other than skype? I read that bumble works for connections as low as 5kbps, but don't know how to test it. Ever tried it? Or are you interested in trying it?

its free: http://mumble.sourceforge.net/

Hey - thanks for the kind words... Agreed on speed, and it will be easier next time... I hope! Hugs to everyone! I think it probably works faster for folks who have not been born abroad, travelled so much, blah, blah, blah... :)

good thing it wasn't much longer or your tour would have been over! There has GOT to be a better to put all of those skills that those professional EFMs have to use and much quicker. But I am glad it worked out for you and the next one should be easier because you should already have the clearance.
